We are seeking a talented and highly motivated Co-Op in Data Science to join our Process Analytical Technology (PAT) R&D group, part of the Global CMC Development organization at Sanofi US. This position is intended for a 6-month (24 weeks) period and offered as a hybrid position with remote and in-person components in our Cambridge and/or Framingham, MA offices.

The PAT R&D group develops, implements, and introduces new in-line, on-line and at-line real time or “near” real-time analytical technology to support production and purification operations for biomanufacturing of a wide variety of molecules and modalities.

Participating in a Co-Op at Sanofi US equips students and researchers with hands-on industrial experience, skills and industry knowledge, enabling them to apply their academic and research expertise in a real-world pharmaceutical setting. It also offers valuable exposure to the growing role of AI, along with insights into how it is transforming drug manufacturing processes

Position Description:

As a data scientist, the candidate will contribute to the development, validation and testing of classical machine learning and deep learning models for sensor signal and image processing for monitoring and control applications in biomanufacturing. The candidate will work in a cross-functional environment and receive mentorship from members of the Process Analytical Technology, Data Sciences and Process Development teams at Sanofi.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop, train, validate and test models (soft sensors) using machine learning and deep learning methods (classical and state of the art) applied for regression of time series sensor signals and/or image processing to monitor critical process parameters (CPP) and critical quality attributes (CQA) in production processes of therapeutic molecules.

  • Responsible for planning, executing, documenting, and interpreting modeling work and results with appropriate supervision and support documentation.

  • Author scientific reports, operational documentation and deliver scientific presentations

Basic qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a PhD candidate or Master’s degree in Data Science, Data Analytics, Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering (Chemical, Biochemical, Electrical, Mechanical) or a related field.

  • Must be enrolled in school the semester following your co-op with Sanofi. 

  • Must be able to work in our office location in a hybrid model and work 40 hrs./week (Monday-Friday) for the full duration of the internship.

  • Must have permanent US work authorization.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced to proficient level in classical machine (ML) and deep learning (DL) methods with relevant hands-on experience in sensor signal and image processing techniques (architectures, feature extraction, transfer and multimodal learning).

  • Advanced to proficient level in Python, open-source libraries, and deep learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, Keras, OpenCV, PyTorch, etc.).

  • Relevant knowledge, coursework, and/or experience in time series processing.

  • Relevant knowledge, coursework, and/or experience with high performance computing (HPC) platforms or AWS (Amazon Web Services).

  • Self-motivation, curiosity, and willingness for continuous learning.

  • Critical thinking, strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented environment under assigned project timelines.
